Workplace Health and Safety Queensland together with Australian Country Choice (ACC) and S. Kidman & Co hosted a “Safety by design in the beef industry” forum in Roma on 5 October 2016. Genia Domaschenz who is a member of AUSTREX Workplace Health and Safety Committee and one of the AUSTREX Health and Safety Representatives travelled to Roma to attend the event.
The event was focused on safety design, technology and leadership and training incorporated both practical and theoretical components. Participants were fortunate to be hosted by three local properties to ensure a hands on experience.
The day began with a site visit to the S. Kidman & Co property at Rockybank to view their new cattle yards followed by a visit to ACC’s Brindley Park and Niella to view their bud box system and yards.
“It was an exciting opportunity to see successful concepts and latest technologies implemented in cattle processing facilities that are much more efficient and safe to both, people and animals. During the properties’ visits and demonstrations, I learnt that different approaches to design could be taken based on the specificity of the operation and business needs. What works for one can be ineffective for the other. There is no universal approach regarding Workplace Health and Safety and this is what we all need to remember when designing Health and Safety systems that work well”.
